SEMAGLUTIDE/TIRZEPATIDE

Semaglutide is a member of a class of drugs that have been used for diabetes management for over a decade – GLPI-RAS (Glaucagon-Like Peptide I Receptor Agonists). The weight loss effects of these agents have been known for some time, however, Semaglutide appears to be “best-in-class” GLP-1 RA for weight loss and was recently approved for weight loss by the FDA under the brand name Wegovy®

Trizepatide is a member of a new class fo called dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists. While recently introduced as a diabetic medication, it has shown great results in weight loss. Tirzepatide works in your system the same a Semaglutide.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Semaglutide/Tirzepatide mimics the effect of “feeling full” resulting in a decreased caloric intake. Semaglutide will delay gastric emptying by reducing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. The delay in gastric emptying can reduce appetite, improve control of eating, and reduce food cravings. Semaglutide is not a stimulant, so you do not have to worry about unpleasant side effects like not being able to sleep or having the jitters.

HOW IS IT ADMINISTERED?

It is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. While some of you may be afraid of injections, these are quite straightforward injections with a very small needle into the abdominal, thigh or back of the arm area (like insulin injections). There are big advantages to the once-weekly dosing -you don’t have to remember your medications and the Semaglutide/Tirzepatide is working 24/7 suppressing your appetite without the stimulant effects of typical weight loss medication.

SIDE EFFECTS?

Most common side effects: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdomen) pain, headache, tiredness (fatigue), upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, gas, stomach flu, and heartburn. Note that most of these are manageable by proper dosing and some overlap with the intended effect of “feeling full.”

WHO QUALIFIES?

Patients with a BMI of 30 or greater or patients with a BMI of 27 with at least 1 co-morbidity (hypertension, diabetes, respiratory/ heart disease, etc.). Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (men 2) should not take Semaglutide/Tirzepatide. WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM INCLUDE?

We will give you all the necessary tools and resources to guide you along the way so that you can achieve your weight loss goals.

Our program is 30 days long and is modified to each patient. The program can be repeated multiple times for those who are trying to achieve greater weight loss. Initially, we will start you at a lower dose of Semaglutide/Tirzepatide to allow your body to get used to it. We typically increase incrementally at month two and month three, however, everyone is different. The goal is for you to lose a few pounds a week with no nausea.
